In 2000, Don joined the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and served on the Council of the State Bar of Texas Animal Law Section for over twenty years.
In November 2001, Don was recognized by the Fort Worth Magazine as a Top Attorney in Tarrant County, Texas.
From 2001 through 2007, Don served on the Texas Humane Legislation Network board and legislative committee, working to obtain passage of animal protection statutes.
From 2007 through 2010, he was an instructor for the Association of Certified Cruelty Investigators and taught classes for the Texas Animal Control Association (TACA).
In 2009 Don was recognized by the City of Arlington, Texas, for his role in the seizure of over 26,000 cruelly treated animals from an import/export business in that city.
In 2010 Don was honored as a "Distinguished Alumnus" by Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.
In 2012 he was honored by the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Texas with the creation and first recipient of the Donald D. Feare Animal Advocacy Award. The award, in his name, is now bestowed upon attorneys who have worked diligently as advocates for animals. Also, in 2012, Don was recognized as a Top Ten Animal Defender in America by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
In 2019 Don was recognized by the animal welfare organization Dallas Pets Alive with its Lifesaving Achievement Award as the attorney handling the case of The State of Texas By and Through the City of Dallas v. Dallas Pets Alive, which resulted in the right to appeal all cases of dogs ordered euthanized for biting humans.
